Sailing the seas since 2019

The Eugen Seibold is the world’s greenest research vessel and was constructed with funding from the Werner Siemens Foundation. Since May of 2019, the innovative yacht has been sailing the high seas—and on the vessel’s maiden voyage, the researchers onboard tested the waters of the Atlantic north of the Canary Islands. The next step will be to collect samples throughout the North Atlantic Ocean: from tropical regions to the polar cap, from the equator to the Svalbard archipelago. By gradually gathering data on the various marine provinces, the climate geochemists at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz will be able to chart a detailed description of the world’s oceans, characterising their current properties and even reconstructing how they change over time.
