Fostering talent in STEM subjects

Swiss Study Foundation scholarship programme

The Werner Siemens Foundation supports the Swiss Study Foundation and its programme to foster talent in STEM subjects – as part of an effort to alleviate the ongoing shortage of qualified professionals in the fields of mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technology.

The project in brief

Studying, sitting exams, earning credit points often dominate day-to-day student life. And many students have to work to support themselves, all of which leaves precious little time for reflection. With its scholarships and summer academies, the Swiss Study Foundation aims to make life a little easier for talented students. And the Werner Siemens Foundation is helping, too.

The Swiss Study Foundation uses the funding provided by the Werner Siemens Foundation in a variety of ways. In particular, it awards ten annual grants for excellence – the Werner Siemens Fellowships – to outstanding students in mathematics, informatics, the natural sciences, technology, medicine and pharmaceutics. The recipients of the Werner Siemens Fellowships not only excel in their discipline – they are students who take an active interest in important societal issues in their subjects, too.

Each Werner Siemens Fellow receives a one-year grant of 19,800 Swiss francs and the opportunity to take part in the broad educational programme of the Swiss Study Foundation, which also fosters exchange between students from other disciplines and networking opportunities with experts in STEM subjects.

The three annual summer academies in Magliaso, Ticino, also receive funding from the Werner Siemens Foundation. The summer schools at the campus on the idyllic shores of Lake Lugano are a fantastic experience for the students: working in interdisciplinary groups, they have the opportunity to explore topics that interest them – but for which they have no time when university is in session.
