Funding criteria

The Werner Siemens Foundation provides generous seed funding to outstanding, innovative projects in technical fields and the natural sciences—with the goal that, in a few years, the projects can be run independently or that the results find industrial application.

The projects must address relevant problems or challenges of our times.

The Foundation considers projects that are highly likely to find industrial application (TRL>3), including novel areas of application. As a rule, these are projects conducted at universities and other higher education institutions, mainly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The Werner Siemens Foundation also supports young talent and junior scholars in the natural sciences, technical fields, mathematics, informatics and medicine.

The Foundation does not support

> Activities in the arts and culture (music, theatre, dance, film, visual arts, cultural heritage), sports and leisure
> Political projects
> Undertakings in social services, disaster relief
> Co-sponsoring of projects with other foundations
> Individual grants, costs of studying, doctoral theses
> Open-ended commitments
> Commercially-oriented projects
> Basic research
> Projects receiving venture capital
